The DaVinci Code: Are you going to see the movie? Have you read the book? Are you curious about who Jesus claimed to be?

I must confess I haven't read the book, but I will very soon. The book has, and the movie will, result in many questions from people. I encourage everyone to investigate the claims made by Dan Brown about Jesus. Here's a place to start, Jesus and DaVinci.

Nope. Never read the book. No plans on seeing the movie.

The book tells lies - for monetary profit - about the LORD. Why would I read it? Why should you read it?

There's lots of worthwhile books waiting to be read, Paul...why spend time on junk?

The only reason I will read it is for credibility, in order to talk with others about its' claims.

Note that I didn't encourgae anyone to readit. I encourgae people to investigate it and know how to respond in conversations that the movie may generate.

I hear where you're coming from, but isn't your basic argument identical to the one used by pastors who decide they'd better just check out exactly how easy it is to access pornography on the internet so they can know what their congregants are looking at, and be better able to help them?

A book containing lies about the LORD is a sinful book, offensive to Him. I don't believe we should spend our time deliberately reading that which offends Him, even if our intentions are good.

I glanced at the Book of Mormon exactly once, to see how similar to the Bible it is (it isn't, BTW...how anyone can possibly believe that is the LORD speaking beats me), but won't read it again, and have never read the Koran. Books that tell lies about the LORD are not books I need to be reading.

Not when there are so many murder mysteries waiting to be read. Hehehe!

However, I've never been able to dissuade anyone yet, so don't really expect to suddenly strike oil now. ;^)

Again I'm not encouraging reading it. But I am encouraging people to be informed. And be willing to engage people in conversation. If you are convinced it's wrong then you should definitely not do it.

Millions of people will see this movie and read this book. We as Christians need to be informed and be prepared to talk with nonChristians about the claims of the author.

I don't think the comparison you made bewteen pornographic material and this book is valid. I say that because pornography makes no philosophical claims that we can deal with and there is nothing good about it. Sort of like my bag of garbage, I take it out of the house right? Certainly this book/movie are well written, well acted and proably an exciting mystery story. So there is some value to it from those perspectives.

I'm not trying to change your mind just expalaining where I'm coming from. If you are convinced it's wrong then you should definitely not do it.

Blessings,

paul

But what about 1 Thessalonians 5:22, where the apostle Paul instructs believers to "Stay away from every form of evil" (HCSB)? Is that at all applicable?

I suppose if you regard the book/movie as evil, you best avoid it.

I wouldn't want to talk you out of that position. But I do think Christyians should be specifically informed. Some will dismiss you if you haven't read the book yourself.
